Manhattan for $1,000 per sq. ft.

NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- The average price of an apartment in New York City's trendy Manhattan district rose in the last three months to a record $1.3 million.

Appraising company Miller Samuel said the average price for a Manhattan apartment rose 8.5 percent from the previous record of $1.2 million set at the end of March -- concluding a three-month period during which prices surged 23 percent, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

"Despite all the negative discussion about the housing boom, buyers are very aggressive," said the firm's chief executive Jonathan Miller, who prepared the study for residential brokerage Prudential Douglas Elliman.

It now costs nearly $1,000 on average to buy a single square foot of living space in Manhattan, Miller Samuel said.
