CHICAGO, June 30 (UPI) -- The Chicago City Council has banned marijuana-flavored suckers and other candies after criticism they may tempt young children to experiment with drugs.

Chicago is the first city in the nation to outlaw the pot-flavored candies made by Munchies, a California company. Alderman Edward Burke, a lawyer and former Chicago police officer who sponsored the ban, said the sole purpose of the "hideous candy" was to groom another generation of drug addicts.

"They advertised the product -- the marijuana-flavored lollipop and gumdrop line -- with claims every lick is like taking a hit," he told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The marijuana-flavored candies are commercially endorsed by rapper Snoop Dogg.
