KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, March 31 (UPI) -- A Malaysian man has lost his fingertip to car thieves who needed his fingerprint to start a high-tech Mercedes, the BBC reported Thursday.

Police said an accountant was struck by a small car carrying four men with machetes in a Kuala Lumpur suburb late Wednesday.

The gang demanded the keys to his Mercedes S-class vehicle, but quickly realized it was equipped with a fingerprint security system that immobilizes the vehicle. The group forced him to apply his finger to the sensor, and drove off with him in the back seat.

They went to a garage and stripped the vehicle, but became frustrated when they needed to restart the vehicle.

The thieves then lopped off the man's fingertip with a machete, stripped him naked and left him standing beside a rural road.

Police said they suspect the gang in a number of area car thefts, although this was the first one to turn bloody.
