Wisconsin hunters to vote on cat killing

MADISON, Wis., March 7 (UPI) -- The Wisconsin Conservation Congress says hunters will be voting on whether stray cats should be designated as prey.

Mark Smith, a firefighter and hunter from La Crosse, suggested free-roaming domestic cats be made an "unprotected species" that could be shot by anyone with a small-game hunting license, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Monday.

His suggestion will be voted on by hunters at the April 11 Wisconsin Conservation Congress spring hearings in all 72 counties. Smith said any cat spotted without a collar should be considered fair game.

However, some cat lovers have spoken out against Smith's proposal.

"We're opening up a whole can of worms here, where they could be shot by anyone anytime," said Dr. Susan Krebsbach, veterinarian and president of the Dane County Veterinary Medical Association and founder of Dane County Friends of Ferals, a group that has trapped and neutered nearly 6,000 feral cats since 2001 with support from the Dane County Humane Society.

Cat enthusiast Ted O'Donnell has set up a Web site, dontshootthecat.com, to oppose the measure.

Governor candidate uses eBay for publicity

AKRON, Ohio, March 7 (UPI) -- Self-employed contractor Larry Bays, a gubernatorial candidate in Ohio, is auctioning his services as a handyman on eBay to gain publicity.

"The idea came to me one evening when I got this letter from (Ohio Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate) Kenneth Blackwell asking for donations for his campaign," said Bays, a contractor and Wayne County parks commissioner.

"At the same time I'm opening his letter, there was this story on the evening news about this pregnant lady who was putting her tummy on eBay and renting it out for advertisement. I thought that was a great idea, and it was exactly what I needed to do." Bidding began at $900, for chores such as painting, cleaning, carpentry and plumbing. The winning bidder gets one day a month of services during Bays first year in the governor's mansion, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

However, Bays, a Republican, said that should he not win the governorship, he will still provide the handyman services.

There were few restrictions for the bidder in the choice of a name for the recently discovered species of titi monkey found in South America.

The winning bidder can even name the species after his or her own name, however, it must be latinized -- if the winner's name is Gordon, the monkey's species name would become Gordonus, reported CNN/Money.

The auction proceeds, will go toward preserving the animals' habitat in the Madidi Protected Area of Bolivia.
