CARROT RIVER, Minn., Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A Minnesota priest is using his status as the catcher of the world's largest walleye to help South Asian fishermen hurt by the Indian Ocean tsunami.

The Rev. Mariusz Zajac, who moved from Poland to the United States a decade ago, was fishing in Tobin Lake when he snagged the 18.3-pound trophy, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported Friday.

Known as the "Fishing Father" in his parish of Carrot River, a hamlet of about 1,000 located a few miles south of Tobin Lake, his walleye is both a world-record and the largest walleye ever caught ice fishing, the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis., said.

Since his Jan. 4 triumph, Zajac set up a tsunami relief fund at his credit union, hoping people who learn of the record will donate money to help Indian Ocean fishermen.

Zajac began the fund with a $100 deposit of his own money. The walleye is being stuffed and put on the wall of a little cabin the priest has on the shores of Tobin Lake.
