SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A California woman is suing the hospital where she had a Caesarean section two years ago for leaving heart monitor wires inside her abdomen.

Surinderjit Kaur alleges in her lawsuit doctors and nurses at the El Camino Hospital near San Jose were negligent. She is seeking more than $25,000 in compensation.

Kaur had a Caesarean section Feb. 3, 2003. During the operation, a fetal heart monitor was attached to her baby's scalp, her attorney, Robert Perez, told the San Jose Mercury News.

Kaur soon after developed abdominal pain, and tests revealed a foreign object was still inside her, Perez said. On Feb. 13, 2004, Kaur underwent a second operation to remove the object. Hospital pathologists determined it consisted of two attached wires that once were part of the fetal heart monitor, Perez said.

Fetal heart rate monitoring was conducted in more than 3 million live births in 2002, the latest year for which figures were available, said Greg Phillips of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Washington.
