Vandals lop off statue's penis

PENTICTON, British Columbia, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A nude sculpture in Penticton, British Columbia, has lost its penis.

Vandals attacked the controversial statue Sunday, Curtis Collins, director of the Art Gallery of the South Okanagan, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Thursday.

"Some people don't enjoy the work of art," Collins said. "Going so far as actually destroying the work is another matter altogether."

Drivers had complained about the distracting nature of the nude and city officials had asked artist Michael Hermesh to cover its genitals.

It was unclear whether or not the missing part would be immediately replaced.

Collins said the material used in the original construction would not set in cold weather.
