New Iowa quarter bothers folk in Nebraska

OMAHA, July 14 (UPI) -- Some Nebraskans believe the new Iowa state quarter steals an idea that came from Nebraska, the Omaha World-Herald reported Wednesday.

The design of the new quarter, which began rolling off the U.S. Mint assembly line Monday, was inspired by Iowa native Grant Wood's painting "Arbor Day" and depicts a teacher and students planting a tree.

But the idea of Arbor Day originated in Nebraska.

"They ought to get their own symbols and leave ours alone," said Cheryl Riley, who lives in Nebraska City, site of the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Jennifer Hans of Nebraska City isn't thrilled either. "We are the home of Arbor Day, not them," she said. "It's irritating."

Hans said she hopes Nebraska can still have an Arbor Day theme for its state quarter.

A spokeswoman for the Nebraska Secretary of State's office said the U.S. Mint has told the state it could still have an Arbor Day theme as long as the design doesn't resemble Iowa's.
