N.Y. Post apologizes for 'scoop' on Kerry

NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- The New York Post Wednesday apologized for its "scoop" that erroneously said Democrat John Kerry picked Dick Gephardt as his presidential running mate.

In fact, on its front page Wednesday, the tabloid included "(REALLY)" to assure readers it had it right this time as it announced Kerry had chosen Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., as his vice presidential running mate.

"Rest assured that generous helpings of crow were eaten here yesterday -- and the leftovers will surely last a few more days," the Post said in its apology.

The Post joins in journalistic infamy the Chicago Tribune, which mistakenly heralded "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" in 1948 and the Chicago Sun-Times, which proudly announced a Reagan-Ford ticket during the Republican convention in July 1980.
