NEW YORK, May 25 (UPI) -- The Carvel Corp. smashed the record for the world's largest ice cream cake in New York Tuesday.

Keely Hopkins of The Guinness Book of World Records said the Carvel cake broke the previous record by weighing in at 12,096 pounds.

The cake took 75 minutes to make and 54 people to build and assemble. The company reported it was about 19 feet long, 9 feet wide and 2 feet high.

For this engineering feat, Carvel created ice cream sheet cakes at a temperature of minus 120 degrees and maintained them in a freezer truck at minus 20 degrees.

Carvel officials said a trial run was held in Jessup, Md., two weeks ago to ensure success.

Once the party ended, ice cream and brownies were donated to City Harvest, an organization that distributes 45,000 pounds of food daily to a network of more than 800 emergency food programs across New York City.
