WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- President Bush spoke at a closed-door meeting in the Capitol Thursday with Republican members of Congress in what one senator described as a campaign rally.

"He just talked about the campaign," Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., told reporters after the meeting. "It was a rally. November's not that far away."

According to attending congressmen, the president spoke about the economy and the war in Iraq, including the plan to transfer sovereignty on June 30. The meeting went on without dissent, Sen. George Allen, R-Va., told the White House pool reporter.

"He was interrupted by applause dozens of times. There were several standing ovations."

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who has an acrimonious relationship with the president, came out of the meetings with his thumbs up and said "Good speech," the pool reporter said.

With the presidential election six months away, Bush has taken a hit for the continued violence in Iraq, the faltering economy and skyrocketing gas prices.
