BRISTOL, England, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The winner of the auction for Rosie Reid's virginity is over and the Londoner plans to announce the lucky man in a few days.

Reid, an 18-year-old lesbian student in social policy at Bristol University, had her virginity up for auction on e-Bay and received about 400 bids, including one for about $16,000.

She has drawn up a shortlist of five and will choose the winner after meeting each of them, Sky News reported Monday.

Reid said she would rather prostitute herself than graduate with debts of up to $28,500.

"I needed to raise cash and I was thinking about what I could sell," she said. "It seemed that my virginity was something really valuable yet at the same time something I could do without."

A Bristol University spokesman tried to shift public attention from personal morals to federal funding dimensions of the event.

"Rosie's auction highlights the financial problems that face today's students," he said.
