Publishers launch new line of paperbacks

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Knopf and Doubleday Broadway announced on Wednesday the launching of a new line of mass market paperbacks.

Published under the auspices of Vintage and Anchor Books, the publishers'eventual goal is to publish one mass market title per month.

The inaugural list will include the number one New York Times best sellers "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown,and "I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story" by Rick Bragg.

The decision was announced by Sonny Mehta, President of Knopf and Stephen Rubin, President of the Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group, both divisions of Random House, whose parent company is Bertelsmann AG.

Mr.Rubin said, "Sonny and I see this list as an opportunity to extend our publishing reach, as it will allow us to acquire and promote books in every available format-hardcover, trade paperback and now mass market. The mass market list will complement the trade paperback list that is currently in place at Vintage/Anchor, and will be published by the same personnel."
