The Detroit Free Press notes the street name is correctly pronounced KRAY'-poe, but it's more commonly referred to as CRAP'-o. Advertisement That's the name of Henry Howard Crapo, who was Michigan's governor from 1866 to 1869. But it's also an unfortunate name that two Highland Township homeowners are no longer willing to bear. Township officials have asked the county road commission to spare Highland residents any further humiliation Dec. 11, by renaming the street to reflect its gubernatorial status The newspaper said Crapo was a lumber baron from Massachusetts who brought a rail line through Highland, sparking the community's growth. He was a relative of William Durant, founder of the General Motors Corp.
