Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is May 30.

Trumpeter Sidney de Paris was born this day in 1905 in Crawfordsville, Ind. He succeeded Rex Stewart in the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra in 1931, then recorded several classics with Don Redman. From 1947 to 1966 he was a mainstay in brother Wilbur de Paris's New New Orleans Jazz Band.

Clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman was born this day in 1909 in Chicago. As a young relatively unknown player, Goodman used his studio recording income to support his mother and 11 siblings after his father died in a taxi accident.

Life changed dramatically for Goodman in 1934 when he and his band played a dance for students at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. The music was so hot the kids rioted, and Goodman was on his way to becoming the King of Swing.

Pianist Dave McKenna, renowned for his inventive medleys, thundering keyboard style and command of tunes from the American songbook, was born this day in 1930 in Woonsocket, R.I.

On this day in 1935, brothers Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey severed their musical relationship. It happened after a disagreement at New York's Glen Island Casino over the tempo on the tune "I'll Never Say Never Again." Tommy walked off the bandstand and took over the Joe Haymes band. The Dorseys were reunited in 1953 and co-led their band again for about two years.

The Tribeca Performing Arts Center's fifth annual Lost Jazz Shrines series celebrates the piano tradition of Mary Lou Williams tonight with pianists JoAnne Brackeen, Bertha Hope and Francesca Tanksley. The Creative Arts Group is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight and Saturday.

Bob Devos and the Gene Ludwig trio are at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight and Saturday.

World music meets free jazz tonight at Boston's Tremont Theater with Robert Labaree on Turkish harp, Jerry Leake on tabla and North Indian percussion, Juanito Pascual on flamenco guitar and Bill Lowe on bass trombone and tuba. He and his band Quarteto Aché play the Carver Center tomorrow night.

The 16th Curacao Jazz Festival gets underway tonight on the Caribbean island. This year's festival is a tribute to jazz and the Afro-Caribbean musical heritage. The three-day lineup includes Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa, the Dave Weckl band, Pierre Dunker and Expedition II, the Toots Thielemans quartet, Ernest Ranglin and Antonio Hart.
