Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

By

Today is May 25.

Contrary to information in many jazz reference materials, today is not the birthday of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. He was born May 26, 1926, in Alton, Ill.

Reed player Jimmy Hamilton was born this day in 1917 in Dillon, S.C. He was best known for his 25 years in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Hamilton had two different playing personalities. On clarinet, his fluent sound always had a conservatory-correct tone and surety. On those rare occasions when he picked up the tenor sax, he played with the grit of a rhythm-and-blues man. Hamilton died in 1993.
