Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is May 18.

Traditional jazz bass player Pops Foster was born this day in 1892 in McCall, La. He worked with the best in jazz throughout his career, including Fate Marable, Kid Ory, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow and Earl Hines. Pops Foster died in 1969.

Trombonist Kai Winding was born this day in 1922 in Aarhus, Denmark. Fame first came as a soloist in the Stan Kenton orchestra in 1946, eight years before he co-led a popular two-trombone quintet with J.J. Johnson. He died in 1983 in Spain.

Blues singer Big Joe Turner was born this day in 1911 in Kansas City, Mo. His classic 1956 album "Boss of the Blues" featured ace jazz players Pete Brown, Lawrence Brown and Pete Johnson.

Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke on Sunday nights. Guitarist Peter Leitch is at Walker's tonight with alto saxophonist Pete Yellin.

There's a Verizon Festival free outdoor concert this evening at Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza featuring the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA jazz orchestra, the Donald Harrison quintet and the Ray Vega Latin jazz sextet.

The Dick Meldonian big band is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight.

The Cape Cod Jazz Society presents Ed Polcer's all-star group tonight in a "Salute to Swing Street" at Cape Cod Community College in Hyannis, Mass.

The Barroom Buzzards are at the Rusty Nail in Twin Lakes, Ohio, this afternoon.

In Chicago... the Erik Truffaz quartet is at the Empty Bottle tonight. There's a CD release party for Jackie Allen, with special guests Kurt Elling and Orbert Davis at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Trumpeter Tom Harrell's quintet is at The Jazz Showcase for tonight. Natalie Yoakley is at the Backroom. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles this evening.

The Chicago Grandstand Big Band with Julie Creighton is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn tonight. The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective is at the Green Mill this afternoon and the Kimberly Gordan trio performs tonight. David Boykin, Karl Seigfried and Mike Reed are at the Hungry Brain with Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly, and Jim Baker tonight.

The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Tim Green and Tim McNamara trio is at Katerina's this noon. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park.
