Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is April 13.


Saxophone and clarinet player Bud Freeman was born this day in Chicago in 1906. He first took up the C-melody saxophone in 1923, switching to tenor two years later. He often recorded with guitarist Eddie Condon, beginning in 1927, but also developed a solo career of his own.

In 1968, he was a founding member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band with Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart. One of Bud Freeman's most beautiful best-selling albums, "Something Tender," was recorded with guitarists Carl Kress and George Barnes.


Vibraphonist Teddy Charles was born this day in 1928 in Chicopee Falls, Mass. He worked with a succession of big bands, including those of Benny Goodman, Chubby Jackson, Artie Shaw and Buddy DeFranco, before turning in the 1950s to small group work and arranging music for Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.

On this day in 1939, cornetist Bobby Hackett recorded "Embraceable You" for the Victor label. It was his first recording as a leader.

In the Boston area... The New Black Eagle Jazz Band is at The Regattabar in Cambridge this afternoon. David Murray and the Gwo Ka Masters are at the Copley Theatre in downtown Boston tonight. Guitarist Phil Sargent's group is at the Acton Jazz Cafe tonight.


In Philadelphia... the Elliott Levin trio is at the Marathon Grill this afternoon. Bassist Stanley Clarke is at TLA tonight. Elliott Levin and Marshall Allen hold a CD release party tonight at Tritone for their new recording, "Opportunities and Advantages," on the CIMP label.

In greater Chicago... Benny Green and Russell Malone are at the Jazz Showcase this week. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles this evening. The Chicago Jazz Orchestra with Frieda Lee is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn tonight. The Kimberly Gordon trio is at the Green Mill tonight. Lucy Smith and Satlah are at HotHouse.

David Boykin, Karl E. H. Seigfried, Mike Reed, Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly and Jim Baker are at the Hungry Brain. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium tonight. Tim Green and Tim McNamara bring their trio to Katerina's this noon. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne. Jim Clark's Jazz People are at Seul's Tavern and Grill in Northfield tonight.


In New Orleans...the 20th edition of the French Quarter Festival winds down today at its 12 stages in and around the Crescent City's most famous neighborhood. The dozens of groups performing today include Leigh "Little Queenie" Harris, the Dukes of Dixieland, the Al Belletto Big Jazz Band featuring Leif Pedersen, Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers, the Wardell Quezerque Big Band, Have Soul Will Travel, The Revealers, six varied brass bands and Mark Braud and the New Orleans Jazz Giants.

On the California jazz scene...pianist Randy Weston's trio is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. The Sunday Jazz Band at Charlie O's in Valley Glen features trombonist Andy Martin tonight. The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton this afternoon.

Jon Mayer and Friends are at Spazio in Sherman Oaks. Christian McBride's band is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight. The Brubeck Festival in Stockton presents the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensemble, the Brubeck Institute jazz quintet and the Capital Jazz Project this afternoon at Victory Park, and the Turtle Island String Quartet at the Haggin Museum. The SFJAZZ Spring Season presents Ken Nordine's Word Jazz tonight at the Yerba Buena Center Forum.
