Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trombonist Buster Cooper was born this day in 1929 in St. Petersburg, Fla. After a stint with Lionel Hampton in 1953 and two years in the house band at New York's Apollo Theatre, he worked with Lucky Millinder, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.

Drummer Jake Hanna was born this day in Boston in 1931. He worked with Marian McPartland and Woody Herman before starting a 10-year association with Merv Griffin's television show.

In the 1970s and '80s, this wide-ranging drummer recorded frequently for Concord Jazz in the company of Dave McKenna, Scott Hamilton and the Concord Super Band.


On this day 1939, Glenn Miller first recorded "Moonlight Serenade" for the Bluebird label. It became his band's theme song.

On the New York jazz scene... the Heath Brothers are at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. The Claudia Acuna quintet Vanguard is at the Jazz Standard this week. Latin singer Albita is at the Blue Note. There's a tribute to Lionel Hampton at Iridium this week featuring the Terry Gibbs quintet with David "Fathead" Newman, Joey DeFrancesco, Gerry Gibbs and Howard Alden. Pianist Eugene Maslov's trio opens the set each night.

The John Hicks-Elise Woods sextet is at Birdland through Saturday with special guest Joe Lovano. The George Coleman quartet is at Smoke through Saturday. The Jazz Gallery presents guitarist David Gilmore's quartet tonight. The Pete Malinverni duo is at the Knickerbocker tonight through Sunday.


The spring edition of the Cape May, N.J., Jazz Festival opens tonight in celebration of its 10th anniversary and paying tribute to trumpet great Clark Terry. Besides Terry's quintet with special guests James Moody and Jon Faddis, tonight's lineup includes singer Ernie Andrews, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon with trumpeters Terell Stafford and Marcus Belgrave, singer Rebecca Parris and the George Mesterhazy trio, Jimmy McGriff, Juanita Williams and Lonnie Youngblood.

Saturday night headliners include singer Dianne Reeves with the Frank Foster Big Band, Slide Hampton's Trombone Choir, the Clark Terry Alumni Band, James Moody, Irene Reid, Oscar Brown Jr. and Edgardo Cintron's Latin jazz all-stars.

In greater Boston... the McCoy Tyner trio is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight. The Chris Potter quartet with Kevin Hays, Scott Colley and Bill Stewart is at The Regattabar in Cambridge.

Four faculty vibists at the Berklee College of Music pay musical tribute to four pioneers of the instrument tonight. Gary Burton, Dave Samuels, Victor Mendoza and Ed Saindon will honor four great vibraphone pioneers Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, Milt Jackson and Cal Tjader. The Four by Four concert's special guest is Dick Johnson on clarinet. The Berklee Performance Center event is part of the college's weeklong Percussion Week.


In Philadelphia... Lucas Brown is at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Cafe Degas tonight. A Jazz Violin Summit at the Four Seasons Hotel benefits the Strings for Schools and will feature violinists John Blake, Diane Monroe and Regina Carter. Saxophonist Eric Alexander is at Chris's Jazz Cafe tonight and Saturday. Jeff Bradshaw is at Zanzibar Blue tonight and Saturday.


In the Chicago area... Bobby Hutcherson is at the Jazz Showcase this week with Willie Pickens, Kelly Sill and Dana Hall. The Chris Lega-Pat Mallinger quintet is at Andy's tonight. Judy Roberts is at The Chicago Firehouse. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium.

On the New Orleans jazz scene... Earl Brown is at Cafe Sbisa. Riccardo Crespo and Sol Brasil are at the Columns Hotel. Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra present their Spring Concert at Dillard University tonight. The Treme Brass Band is at Donna's. Ryan Burrage and the Rhythmakers are at Fritzel's.

Devin Philips and Todd Londagin are at the Funky Butt. Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Le Bon Temps Roule. The Rob Wagner trio is at Loft 523. Dr. Bone and the Hepcats are at Lounge Lizards.

The Ernie Elly Slickshots with Thais Clark are at the Palm Court. Leroy Jones leads tonight's band at Preservation Hall. Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. The New Orleans Jazz Vipers are at the Spotted Cat. Kim Prevost and Bill Solley are at the Spotted Cat.


The Poncho Sanchez Latin jazz band is at the Blue Note in Columbia, Mo., tonight.


In California... there's a tribute to saxophonist Stan Getz at Dizzy's in San Diego tonight featuring his son, Steve Getz, on drums with San Diego saxophonist Joe Marillo. Vibes player Stefon Harris's 12-piece Grand Unification Theory group is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles through Sunday. Pianist Pete Jolly's trio is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks tonight. The Chris Williams quintet is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. Trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez is at Charley O's in Valley Glen tonight with the John Heard trio.

Spyro Gyra is at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland through Sunday. Drummer Steve Smith and saxophonist Michael Zilber bring their quartet to Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco tonight. The SFJAZZ spring season in San Francisco continues tonight with Words of Steel featuring Quincy Troupe and the Oliver Lake Steel Quartet at the Herbst Theater.


Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle this week.


The Jobim-Morelenbaum quintet presents the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim tonight at the Theatre de Vienne in Vienne, France.
