'Swept Away' sweeps Razzies

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 22 (UPI) -- Razzie voters have spoken -- declaring "Swept Away" by far the worst movie of 2002 at the 23rd annual Golden Raspberry Awards in Santa Monica.

Madonna's remake of writer-director Lina Wertmüller's classic 1974 comedy-drama took five Razzies -- tying with "Mommie Dearest" (1981), "The Post Man" (1997), "Wild Wild West" (1999) and "Freddie Got Fingered" (2001) for most Razzies "won" in a single year.

Razzie voters "rewarded" Madonna with a Worst Actress trophy, but they didn't think the Material Girl's acting was any worse than Britney Spears' performance in her screen debut, "Crossroads." Spears tied Madonna for Worst Actress.

In addition to the acting Razzie for Madonna, "Swept Away" was also dishonored for Worst Director (Madonna's husband, Guy Ritchie) and Worst Screen Couple (Madonna and co-star Adriano Giannini).

In addition to her share of the Worst Actress award, Spears also "won" for Worst Original Song -- for "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." This is the second year in a row that a pop star making her screen debut has "won" Worst Actress. Mariah Carey took the prize last year for "Glitter."

Robert Benigni -- who won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1998 for "Life Is Beautiful" -- took Worst Actor this year for his remake of "Pinocchio."

"Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" took the prize for Worst Screenplay and Worst Supporting Actor (Hayden Christensen). It could have been worse for the fifth of George Lucas' "Star Wars" movies -- it was up for seven Razzies.

Benigni also escaped further ignominy, as his Worst Actor "award" was the only "win" out of six nominations. Eddie Murphy's critical and commercial failure "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" also had six nominations, but came away empty-handed.

Madonna also "won" for Worst Supporting Actress for the James Bond adventure "Die Another Day." Her three "wins" bring Madonna's career Razzie total to nine wins and 15 nominations -- the most for any female performer in Razzies history.

"Swept Away" was the first movie ever to take the prize for both worst picture and worst remake, and the lowest-grossing Worst Picture "winner" ever, with less than $600,000 U.S. box office. Madonna and Ritchie are the first husband-and-wife team to "win" for Worst Actress and Worst Director since Bo Derek and the late John Derek.

"Winners" were determined by a mailing ballots among 563 Golden Raspberry Award Foundation members in 39 U.S. states and 12 foreign countries. The foundation -- created in 1980 by author and movie fan John Wilson -- is committed to deriding what it considers to be the worst in American movies each year.

The Razzie is a handcrafted golf-ball-sized raspberry atop a mangled reel of Super 8 film, spray-painted gold. It has an estimated street value of $4.89.

The 2003 Razzies began with a production number -- "All that Razz!" -- a parody of the song from the leading Oscar contender "Chicago."
