Singer Mark Murphy was born this day in 1932 in Fulton, N.Y. The consummate jazz hipster, Murphy seeks out good songs and neglected songs and gives them personal twists. He calls his style "emotional harmonic music."
Quincy Jones was born this day in 1933. Now best known as a record producer and record label owner, Jones cut his musical teeth on jazz as a trumpet player in the Lionel Hampton band in the early 1950s.
Jazz organ player Shirley Scott was born this day in 1934 in Philadelphia, the city where so many jazz organ players have come from. She died in 2002.
On this day in 1928, trombonist Jack Teagarden recorded his first solo. The song was "She's a Great, Great Girl!" (on the Victor label).
