THINGS WE DON'T UNDERSTAND

Many an adoptee dreams of being descended from royalty, Marty Johnson of Eagan, Minn., apparently is.

Johnson, 38, a mortgage broker who grew up on Omaha, Neb., found his birth mother two years ago -- a Cedar Falls, Iowa, woman who fell in love with a Nigerian student, a tribal chief, at Northern Iowa University. But he had to return to his homeland and she put the baby up for adoption.

With encouragement from his wife, Laura, Johnson made some contacts in Nigeria and now is regarded as the chief's first born. Laura Johnson said she always knew her husband was "a prince."

The family plans to travel to Nigeria later this year for what might be a royal welcome. When his father dies, Marty Johnson will become known as Ude-Ekeh, chief, in Orlu, Nigeria. His son Jacob, 6, also is in line for the title.

NEWS OF OTHER LIFE FORMS

Eileen Oren and Bob Taylor this weekend said "I do" but everyone in audience had their eyes fixed on the best man and maid of honor, the Star Press in Muncie, Ind., reports.

Bobbi, the best man, got a little agitated during the wedding ceremony, letting out growls of boredom, while Masai, the maid of honor, laid on a platform and smiled at the audience, the paper says.

Oren is the owner of ME's Zoo, home to 213 animals, including the couple's two beloved white tigers. Oren and Taylor met about nine years ago when Taylor, then a Ball State architectural professor, brought students to the zoo to design and build different projects.

Also in the ceremony was Omar, the camel, who was the ring bearer.

TODAY'S SIGN THE WORLD IS ENDING

London's Daily Mail reports psychics who claim to have contacted the spirit of Lady Di for a TV show said she was "having fun" in the afterlife and spending time with Mother Teresa.

Diana was working with children while watching over her own sons, British mediums Craig and Jane Hamilton-Parker told the paper.

The couple claim they communicated with Princess Di for the controversial program, which aired on U.S. TV Sunday and was to air, in part, in Britain this week.

The psychics say Diana told them she was not pregnant but she did plan to marry her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed. She added she was not bitter about her death in a 1997 car crash which was definitely an accident, they said.

AND FINALLY, TODAY'S UPLIFTING STORY

Some military personnel being deployed to the Middle East have had to surrender their pets to an animal shelter for adoption if family and friends cannot take care of them, but others are trying to find foster families.

The SPCA serving Erie County near Buffalo, N.Y., has an existing foster program for animals that need to be placed for a temporary period and it's extended its program to the military.

"In the one week in which we announced the foster care program for pets of those being deployed in the military, 175 people have called to be foster families," the agency's Gina Browning told United Press International.

Another way to find foster pet care for the military is through the Web sites netpets.org and felinerescue.net.
