Lester Young's drum-playing younger brother, Lee Young, was born this day in 1917 in New Orleans.

Bass player Alcide Pavageau was born this day in 1888 in New Orleans. His nickname was "slow drag" and his musical partners included Bunk Johnson and George Lewis.


On this day in 1963, saxophonist John Coltrane and singer Johnny Hartman recorded a classic jazz album as musical partners on the Impulse! label. The album, called "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman," contains what some consider the definitive vocal version of Billy Strayhorn's composition "Lush Life."


On this night in 2002... Jazz at Lincoln Center opened a three-night concert celebration of the music of singer-songwriter Abbey Lincoln at New York's Alice Tully Hall with special guests Freddy Cole, Marc Cary, Savion Glover, Joe Lovano and Steve Coleman.
