Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trumpet player Wingy Manone was born this date in New Orleans in 1904. His finest recordings were made in the 1930s. His got his nickname "Wingy" after losing his right arm in a streetcar accident. Manone was a frequent victim of legendary jazz practical joker Joe Venuti. One year on Manone's birthday, Venuti sent him a big gift-wrapped box containing one cuff link.

Tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray was born this day in 1921 in Oklahoma City. He joined the Earl Hines band in 1943 and came to prominence in jam sessions and recordings with Dexter Gordon. Gray was an important contributor to Benny Goodman's first experiments with bebop. He was found dead in the Las Vegas desert in May 1955, presumably killed after performing at a hotel opening with Benny Carter's big band.


On this day in 1929, pianist Earl "Fatha" Hines made his first recording with his nine-piece band. The song was called "Sweet Ella May."

Tonight and Saturday are Flamenco Nights at Lincoln Center. The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and a flamenco ensemble led by Chano Dominguez premiere commissioned works at Alice Tully Hall.


In the Boston area... the Rusty Scott quintet with special guest Bill Pierce is at the Regattabar in Cambridget tonight. Al Kooper and The Funky Faculty are at Scullers in Boston tonight. As part of the Berklee College of Music's Black History Month Music Celebration, Harvard University's Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. will present the sixth annual Dr. Warrick L. Carter Lecture this afternoon. His topic is "Encarta Africana: W.E.B. Dubois to John Coltrane." The event in the David Friend Recital Hall is free and open to the public.

In Philadelphia... The Jazz Journeys Foundation and Zanzibar Blue present "Under the Starry Skies" at The Franklin Institute's Fels Planetarium tonight. Chris Calloway stars in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill" tonight through Sunday at the Bristol Riverside Theatre in Bristol. Joann Pascale is at Chris's Jazz Cafe. The World Trio with Kenny Ulansey, Paul Butler and Jim Hamilton is at Tritone.


On the Chicago area jazz scene... the Mike Smith quintet is at Andy's. Bobby Lewis is at the Backroom. The Kelly Brand-Kelly Sill duo is at The Foundry at Fox Valley Mall. Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra is at the Green Mill.

Judy Roberts and Two for Brazil are at the Jazz Showcase through Sunday. Tim Tobias and Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight.

The John Brumbach quartet with Selina Baker is at Katerina's. Alphonse Ponticelli and Swing Gitan are at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston. John Wright is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Bradley Williams trio with Gingi Lahera is at Pops for Champagne. Steve Ditzell is at Pops of Highwood.
