Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist and composer Eubie Blake was born this day in 1883 in Baltimore, the son of slaves. The ragtime and jazz player had a profound influence on the development of stride piano. He died in New York in 1983, five days after his 100th birthday.

Pianist Mike Abene was born this day in 1942 in New York. He first performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958, at age 16, as a member of Marshall Brown's International Youth Band. He has been busiest as an arranger and musical director for jazz singers including Peggy King, Anita Gravine, Karen Akers, Carol Sloane and Liza Minelli.

On the New York jazz scene... John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and Al Foster bring their all-star band ScoLoHoFo into Iridium through Sunday. Charles McPherson's quartet is at The Jazz Standard this week. The Bob James trio is at the Blue Note. Peter Apfelbaum and the NY Hieroglyphics are at the Jazz Gallery tonight and Saturday.

Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jazz at the Penthouse presents Bone Structure featuring trombonists Wycliffe Gordon and Ron Westray through Saturday at the Kaplan Penthouse. Gordon also hosts today's Jazz for Young People concert "What is Improvisation?" at The Apollo Theatre in Harlem and tomorrow at Alice Tully Hall.


Bassist Harvie S and Eye Contact are at the George Washington School in Hillside, N.J., tonight.


Saxophonist Dan Moretti and Once Through celebrate the release of their new CD "Stories" tonight at Chan's in Woonsocket, R.I.
