Trumpeter Howard McGhee was born in 1918 in Tulsa, Okla. He was a veteran of the New York jam sessions that gave birth to bebop, and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic. McGhee also took part in Charlie Parker's classic "Lover Man" and "Relaxin' at Camarillo" recording sessions. In fact, "Lover Man" originally was issued under McGhee's name, not Parker's.

On this night in 2001, the Jazz Composers Collective took over The Jazz Standard club in New York for a weeklong jazz festival featuring its primary bandleaders in 10 different band combinations. They included saxophonist Ted Nash and Odeon, the Herbie Nichols Project, Nash's Double Quartet, the Frank Kimbrough Trio, Ron Horton's Genius Envy band, Ben Allison and Medicine Wheel, Michael Blake's Free Association, Frank Kimbrough and Noumena and Ron Horton's New Sextet.
