On the recording front...

For nearly 20 years, Mosaic Records has compiled boxed set reissues by many of jazz's most significant artists. It is now turning some of its focus to outstanding musicians whose recorded output is too small or scattered to warrant the full-scale treatment of the standard Mosaic boxed set.

Mosaic Select was formed to address this circumstance, while bringing overdue attention to certain artists who are particularly threatened by obscurity. Grachan Moncur III and Carmell Jones are the first musicians featured in this week's launch of this new series with limited edition three-CD sets. While both men have always enjoyed the enormous respect of their fellow musicians and the appreciation of the more enlightened critics, they did not receive a fraction of the public acclaim their talents deserve.

When he emerged in the musically turbulent 1960s, trombonist Moncur was a key contributor to Blue Note Records' more structured approach to "free" or "avant-garde" jazz.

The Carmell Jones set is more traditional in style. The Kansas City native established himself as one of the finest trumpeters on the early '60s West Coast scene as a disciple of Clifford Brown. Like Brownie, Jones had a sweetly powerful sound and dazzling technique that never interfered with his creativity or his humility. He is best known for his presence on Horace Silver's classic 1964 Blue Note album "Song for My Father." The sessions contained in this set were recorded prior to the Silver date. Most of the material was recorded for Dick Bock's Pacific Jazz label between 1961 and 1963. As is often the case, Mosaic has unearthed a lost treasure with seven tracks from a previously unreleased 1963 Frank Strazzeri session that includes Jones, tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Nick Martinis.

The sets were released Tuesday in numbered, limited editions of 5000, but unlike the larger format Mosaic releases, they will be available in retail stores approximately one year after the initial release.
