Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Bass player Wellman Braud was born this day in New Orleans in 1891. He also played guitar and doubled as a brass band drummer. He was a mainstay in the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1927 to 1935. Wellman Braud claimed he developed the walking bass line technique. He died in Los Angeles in 1966.

Pianist Barbara Carroll was born this day in 1925 in Worcester, Mass. She led a bebop trio in New York in the late 1940s and '50s, then took 20 years out to remarry and raise a family. She resumed her career in 1976.


Brazilian pianist and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, the father of the Bossa Nova, was born this day in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro. The man who wrote countless songs that became favorites of jazz musicians died in December 1994 in New York.

Bandleader and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson was born this day in 1929 in Philadelphia. The jazz standards he has written include "Whisper Not" and "I Remember Clifford," a musical elegy to trumpeter Clifford Brown.


Pianist D.D. Jackson was born in Ottawa on this day in 1967. He's a disciple of late pianist Don Pullen and has released several fine recordings on the Justin Time label and for RCA Victor.

On the New York jazz scene... Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. The Joe Zawinul Syndicate is at the Blue Note. There's a guitar spectacular double billing at Iridium featuring the Pat Martino band with special guest Joey DeFrancesco plus the Great Guitar Trio of Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden and Frank Vignola. The Bill Charlap trio is at Smoke tonight. The Abdul Zahir Batin group is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight. Pianist Andy Milne's "Dapp Theory" is at the Jazz Gallery tonight.

The Joanne Brackeen quartet featuring Ravi Coltrane is at the Jazz Standard. Violinist Regina Carter is at Birdland tonight. Trumpeter Gary Wofsey's quintet is at The Garage tonight.

Jazz at Lincoln Center features drummer Lewis Nash in a "Grooves Up Front" concert in the Kaplan Penthouse. His all-star group includes pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Greene and piper Paddy Keenan.

Upstate... vibraphonist Matthias Lupri's quintet featuring saxophonist Mark Turner is at the Montage Grille in Rochester tonight.


The Dave Holland quintet is at the Stockton, N.J., Performing Arts Center tonight.


In and around Boston... Sphere with Gary Bartz, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Ben Riley is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Charles Lloyd is at Scullers jazz club in Boston. The Samuel Torres Group featuring Ernesto Simpson is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight.


In Philadelphia... the Sonny Fortune quartet is at Chris's Jazz Cafe. Tony Grandberry is at Zanzibar Blue.


"Contrasts" (Old, New, Borrowed and Blue) with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra is at Fairmount Temple in Cleveland tonight.


In Chicago... the Jazz Institute of Chicago's three-day 25th annual Jazz Fair winds down tonight at the Chicago Cultural Center. The Russ Phillips quintet is at Andy's. Judy Roberts is at The Chicago Firehouse. Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues are at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago.

Bopology is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. The Kelly Brand trio is at Pete Miller's Steakhouse. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Rachel Charson quintet is at Pops for Champagne. The Dave Gordon trio is at Pops of Highwood. Kaliq Woods is at the Velvet Lounge.
