Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trombonist J.J. Johnson was born this date in 1924 in Indianapolis. His virtuosity, pure sound and harmonic sophistication helped bring the trombone to the frontline in bebop. His best-known composition, recorded by many contemporary musicians, is "Lament."

Valve trombonist, composer and arranger Juan Tizol was born this day in 1900 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1929 and fast became a close friend. Tizol provided the Ellington band with popular music themes, including "Caravan," "Perdido" and "Moonlight Fiesta." He retired from touring in 1960 and died in California in 1984.


Reed player and trumpeter Pud Brown was born this day in 1917 in Wilmington, Del. In the early 1930s, he moved to Chicago where he played with Bud Freeman, Jimmy Dorsey and Pete Daily. In the 1950s, he recorded in California with Kid Ory, Teddy Buckner and Jack Teagarden.

On this day in 1947, the Gene Krupa Orchestra recorded the Gerry Mulligan tune "Disc Jockey Jump." Mulligan was saxophonist and arranger in the Krupa band at the time.

On the New York jazz scene... the Joe Zawinul Syndicate is at the Blue Note through Sunday. There's a guitar spectacular double billing at Iridium this week featuring the Pat Martino band with special guest Joey DeFrancesco plus the Great Guitar Trio of Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden and Frank Vignola. The Cindy Blackman quartet is at the Jazz Standard through Thursday. Barbara Carroll is at Birdland tonight.

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. Singer-pianist The Paulo Braga quintet is at the Zinc Bar. Jazz at Lincoln Center begins Jazz 101, a four-week jazz introductory course hosted by tenor saxophonist Loren Schoenberg and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. This is a Cubansoul Wednesday at Nell's, featuring the Cuban pianist-percussionist Lisandro and his band Tradado.

In and around Boston... The Fred Hersch trio is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. The Legends Of The Bandstand, featuring Cedar Walton on piano, Louis Hayes on drums, Earl May on bass, Bobby Watson on alto sax and Curtis Fuller on trombone, are at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight and Thursday. The John Baboian quartet is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight.
