WELCH TO HELP NYC SCHOOLS

Retired General Electric Chief Executive Officer Jack Welch, known as Neutron Jack for his tough management style, will teach at the New York City's new Leadership Academy to make school principals "great instructional leaders."

While in the private sector, Welch was quick to remove managers he deemed incompetent and required top managers at GE to identify the bottom 10 percent of their staffs and remove them, The New York Times reports.

That's not so easy to do in the public sector, but New York City's Chancellor Joel Klein says he will try to remove 50 poorly performing principals this year by documenting "persistent educational failure."

Chancellors in New York City won the power to do this in 1997, but no previous chancellor has attempted.

INTERNET RADIO

An innovative radio lets people listen to Internet stations anywhere, or at least 328 yards from a computer, The British Broadcasting Corp. reports.

The GlobalTuner InTune200 is a small portable radio that connects to a computer wirelessly, providing access to any music on the PC or to thousands of Internet radio stations.

PDT, a company located in Manchester, England, developed the portable player.

"The idea of Internet radio is great, but not the idea of sitting next to the computer to listen," PDT Managing Director David Holder tells the BBC.
