Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Dec. 29.

Guitarist Irving Ashby was born this day in 1920 in Somerville, Mass. He followed Oscar Moore in Nat King Cole's trio for five years beginning in 1947.

Trombonist Cutty Cutshall was born this day in Huntington County, Pa., in 1911. As a member of Benny Goodman's band from 1940 to 1942, he and Lou McGarrity formed one of the best two-man trombone sections ever to work with the band. Cutshall died in 1968.

Pianist Danilo Perez was born this day in 1966 in Panama City, Panama. Perez came into the jazz spotlight years ago as a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra, the trumpet great's last major jazz group.

Tonight's big band headliner is an all-star Stan Kenton alumni band led by Bob Curnow. It includes Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Buddy Childers, Jack Nimitz, Carl Saunders, Mike Vax, Peter Erskine and Bill Trujillo.
