Today is Dec. 27.

New Orleans trumpeter Bunk Johnson was born this date in 1889. He played second fiddle, or in this case, second cornet, to the legendary and unrecorded Buddy Bolden in Bolden's band. Louis Armstrong once said Johnson played funeral marches with such feeling and emotion they made him cry. Johnson died in 1949.

Bass player and jazz writer Bill Crow was born this day in 1927 in Othello, Wash. Crow has won many favorable reviews for his two books of jazz anecdotes.

Pianist Walter Norris was born this date in 1931 in Little Rock, Ark. He has been living in Berlin since the late 1970s.

On this day in 1947, Woody Herman's Second Herd first recorded Jimmy Giuffre's composition "Four Brothers." The tune was written for Herman's famous "Four Brothers" saxophone section, whose original members were Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff and Herbie Steward. Al Cohn soon replaced Steward in the lineup.
