THINGS WE DON'T UNDERSTAND

It's not that we don't understand how we got the hangover, it's trying to figure out how to get rid of it.

The Mirror newspaper in London and the Discovery Channel have published a number of possible remedies to consider, including a Puerto Rican cure of rubbing a lemon under your drinking arm.

If that doesn't work, there's said to be relief in eating pickled herring, a cup of rabbit-poo tea or a plate of bitter almonds and dried eel, the cure of the Middle Ages.

No? Then you can always resort to whipping up some pickled sheep's eye in tomato juice or try dabbing your temple with rose oil -- it might not ease your headache but you smell nicer for a while.

NEWS OF OTHER LIFE FORMS

Canada's Winnipeg Sun newspaper says Jacob and Sarah Wolfe may need a deer-crossing sign in their kitchen.

Last month a deer calmly strolled into their home. "I said something like 'What the heck are you doing here?' He just looked at me," Jacob told the paper.

The deer then followed Jacob in the door, casually climbing the steps and strolling through the house like a family pet. "Sarah had some potted flowers in the corner. He bit one off and ate it," Jacob said. "He wasn't afraid at all. I petted him, and he tried to lick my face the way a dog would."

After giving their guest water, they tried to get it to leave but it stopped in the garden on the way out for a few snacks for the road.

TODAY'S SIGN THE WORLD IS ENDING

Long considered to be one of the more over-sexed Hollywood celebrities, Jack Nicholson says he's losing his sex drive.

Nicholson gave an interview to Newsweek about his love life and London's Sun newspaper New York reporter also says Nicholson, now a 65-year-old father of four, prefers sleeping alone.

"I'm a different guy here in my sixties. I don't have the same libido," Nicholson says in the Sun story. "It used to be that I didn't think I could go to sleep if I wasn't involved in some kind of amorous contact or another. Well, I spend a lot of time sleeping alone these days."

Nicholson won Oscars for "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," "Terms Of Endearment" and "As Good As It Gets." He is divorced from Sandra Knight, mother of his daughter, Jennifer, 38.

AND FINALLY, TODAY'S UPLIFTING STORY

As a Christmas gift to his neighbors, Joe Blaha has created a 1/40th-scale Eiffel Tower replica in his front yard in Arden Hill, near Minneapolis-St. Paul.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports this suburban Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel hasn't even been to Paris but was inspired by the soaring French tower and decided to recreate it.

The service manager at a plumbing company, the paper says Blaha spent 200 hours designing, welding and erecting a 23-foot replica of the landmark. He's decked it out with 4,100 little white lights.

"I use Christmas as an excuse to do something that I couldn't do any other time of year," said Blaha, 43. Last year he fashioned three, 18-foot palm trees -- the tree trunks lighted in white and palm fronds outlined in green.
