Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

This was also the day in 1927 when Eddie Condon and Red McKenzie recorded their first classic Chicago jazz session.


On this night in 2001... the Harvard University Jazz Band presented a tribute to late pianist John Lewis at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, Mass. It included a performance of "The Gates of Harvard," which Lewis wrote in 1980 for Harvard's first commission of a jazz composition. Harvard's annual jazz residency program has been going strong ever since.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene... the Blue Note holds a party tonight to mark the club's 21st anniversary. It will honor trumpeter Clark Terry with special guests Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, Jimmy Heath, Billy Taylor, Claudio Roditi, Jimmy Owens, Frank Wess, Bob Cranshaw, Carrie Smith and a few more surprise participants.

At Birdland... New School University's Jazz and Contemporary Music Program presents a very benefit concert tonight featuring some of the program's most talented students and alumni performing alongside an all-star lineup of faculty members and mentors. They include saxophonist Joe Lovano, drummer Andrew Cyrille, bassist Reggie Workman, soprano sax player Jane Ira Bloom, trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, pianist Tino Dorado and percussionist Jamey Haddad. Proceeds benefit the program's scholarship fund.


The John Allmark Jazz Orchestra is at Bovi's in East Providence, R.I., tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene... the William Garcia quartet is at Cafe Bolera. Terry Callier and Beyond are at the Green Mill. Yoko Noge's Jazz Me Blues are at HotHouse tonight. Kelly Brand is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. Sami Scott is at Philander's in Oak Park. Two for Brazil present their Holiday Show at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans tonight... the Panorama Jazz Band is at the Blue Nile. Earl Brown's trio is at Cafe Sbisa. Two Pan Sam's jazz jam is at Checkpoint Charlie. Bob French and Friends are at Donna's. The Fresh Off the Boat Refugee Jazz Band and Jason Marsalis are at the Funky Butt. Papa Grows Funk is at the Maple Leaf. Reginald Koeller leads the band tonight at Preservation Hall. Charmaine Neville is at Snug Harbor. The New Orleans Jazz Vipers are at the Spotted Cat. The Rob Wagner trio is at d.b.a.

On the California jazz scene... the Tom Kubis Big Band is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Estrada Brothers featuring Reuben Estrada are at Spazio in Sherman Oaks. Big Band 2000 with Luretta McCray is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton. Sam Most, Frank Capp and Pat Tuzzolino are at Charlie O's in Valley Glen tonight. Jing Chi featuring Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip and Vinny Colaiuta is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. SoVoSo is at Yoshi's in Oakland.


Cuba's Havana International Jazz Festival opens its weeklong run today. Performers include Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Dave Brubeck, Steve Turre, Kenny Barron, Ivan Lins, Ed Motta, John Benitez, Dafnis Prieto, Danilo Perez, Regina Carter, Arturo O'Farrill, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ignacio Berroa, Charlie Haden, Dave Valentin, Bobby Sanabria, Jorge Pardo, Chucho Valdes, Bobby Carcasses, Ernan Lopez Nussa, Mezcla and many others.
