Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Jazz violinist Eddie South was born this day in 1904 in Louisiana, Mo. South was one of the finest classical violinists ever to play jazz. He made a series of historic recordings in Paris in 1927 with guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli. Eddie South died in 1962.

Tenor saxophonist Bootsie Barnes was born this day in 1937 in Philadelphia.


Trumpeter Randy Brecker, oldest of the two musical Brecker brothers, was born this day in 1945 in Philadelphia.


Jazz composer and orchestra leader Maria Schneider, a protege of the late Gil Evans, was born this day in 1960 in Windom, Minn. She was voted arranger of the year in the most recent DownBeat magazine reader's poll.


One of the greatest jazz singers of all time was just 17 when she made her recording debut on this date with Benny Goodman in 1933. The singer was Billie Holiday -- and the song was "Your Mother's Son-In-Law."

On the recording front...


Four80East, the Canadian duo comprised of Rob DeBoer on guitar and piano and Tony Grace on drums, is out with a new jazz-tinged CD called "Nocturnal." It's on the Higher Octave label. Guest musicians include trumpeter Ivana Santilli, tenor saxophonist Jon Stewart and flutist Andrew McPherson.


Singer Terry Blaine and pianist Mark Shane are out with their fifth major recording together. "Lonesome Swallow" is patterned after the rare late 1920's duet recordings of Ethel Waters and James P. Johnson.

Singer Samantha Siva has released "Masquerade" on her own Genie Entertainment label. Participating musicians include pianist David Benoit, guitarist Chieli Minucci, saxophonist Richard Elliot and drummer Poogie Bell.
