Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trombonist Tyree Glenn was born in 1912 in Corsicana, Texas. He was a fixture in the Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington bands for many years. He died in 1974.

Composer and arranger Johnny Mandel was born this day in 1925 in New York. Like Tyree Glenn, Mandel played trombone. He also played trumpet. Mandel first came to prominence as an arranger for Woody Herman. His most famous composition, "The Shadow of Your Smile," was written for the 1965 movie "The Sandpiper."


Bass player Ray Drummond, nicknamed "The Bulldog," was born this day in 1946 in Brookline, Mass. His jazz career began on the West Coast after several cycles in which he worked in corporate America as an insurance and food service executive.

Sex Mob performs tonight at Sweet Rhythm, formerly Sweet Basil.


Caetano Veloso is at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Kenny Barron's quintet is at Shanghai Jazz in Madison, N.J., tonight. Dave Samuels is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight. David Chevan and Warren Byrd bring their duo version of the Afro-Semitic Experience to the Havdallah Cafe at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, N.J., tonight.
