Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Nov. 22.

Trombonist Jimmy Knepper was born this day in 1927 in Los Angeles. He worked for many different top big bands before gaining public attention as a member of the Charles Mingus band in the late 1950s.

Jazz composer, arranger, conductor and historian Gunther Schuller was born this day in 1925 in New York. Schuller began his career in jazz by recording as a French horn player with Miles Davis's nonet in 1949 and 1950. He also recorded with Davis in 1958 on the classic "Porgy and Bess" collaboration with arranger Gil Evans. He has won the Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur Award for his compositions.

Clarinet and baritone saxophone player Ernie Cacares was born this day in 1911 in Rockport, Texas. Starting in 1938, he was a frequent collaborator with cornet player Bobby Hackett for more than 30 years. He died in 1971.

On the recording front...

Late singer Rosemary Clooney's last concert recording is scheduled for release today on Concord Records. She recorded it in Hawaii in December 2001 with Big Kahuna conducting the Honolulu Symphony Pops.

Martin Cohen, founder of the instrument company Latin Percussion Inc., has released "Montvale Rumba," his first recording in 20 years. It was titled and inspired by melodies and ancestral rhythms based on drum and vocal music indigenous to Cuba. The LP Rumba Ensemble includes conguero Little Johnny Rivero, percussionist-singer Pedro Martinez and percussionist Luisito Quintero.
