Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, was born this date in 1873 in Florence, Ala. His compositions, including "Memphis Blues," "St. Louis Blues" and "Beale Street Blues," remain an important part of the jazz repertoire.

Traditional jazz guitarist, bandleader and club owner Eddie Condon was born this day in 1905 in Goodland, Ind. He was the figurehead of the emerging Chicago jazz scene in the 1920s before moving to New York. He died in 1973.


Singer-pianist Diana Krall was born this day in 1964 in Nanaimo, British Columbia.


On this day in 1937, Bob Crosby first recorded "South Rampart Street Parade" in Los Angeles for the Decca label.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


The service organization Chamber Music America has awarded grants totaling $168,000 to 12 jazz artists in the third year of its New Works Creation and Presentation program. They are Tim Armacost, Baikida Carroll, George Colligan, Robin Eubanks, David Gilmore, Ned Goold, Jovino Santos Neto, Greg Osby, Michele Rosewoman, Walt Weiskopf and Michael Weiss. More than 130 composers applied for grants for their ensembles to create and perform new jazz works. The grants range from $10,000 to $14,000.

Branford Marsalis is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight through Tuesday.
