Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Mahalia Jackson was born this day in New Orleans in 1911. This devoutly religious woman rose from cleaning lady and neighborhood church singer to the heights of artistic and financial success. Without peer as a gospel singer, Jackson made church music familiar to the world at-large. Her 1945 recording "Move On Up A Little Higher" sold more than 1 million copies.

Saxophonist and bandleader Charlie Barnet was born this day in 1913 in New York. His big band caused a sensation in 1939 when it succeeded the Count Basie orchestra at the Famous Door in New York. His biggest hit was a definitive version of "Cherokee." Barnet died in 1991.


Saxophonist Warne Marsh was born this day in 1927 in Los Angeles. His primary musical associations were with Lennie Tristano and Lee Konitz. He died in 1987.

On this night in 2001, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove brought their Directions in Music tour to Orchestra Hall in Chicago.

The Jazz Gallery presents trumpeter Roy Hargrove's debut of his Hammond B3 organ quartet tonight, featuring organist Raymond Angry, drummer Winard Harper and guitarist Saul Rubin. Trumpeter Duane Eubanks performs every Saturday night from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. in the club's After Hours series. The James Carney trio is at Triad tonight. Jimmy McGriff is at Sweet Rhythm.

Bassist Alex Blake's Quartet is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight. Paul Bollenback and Ron Affif perform today in the Arkadia Music Center's Guitar Days series. Jazz at Lincoln Center's new Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, led by Arturo O'Farrill, is at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts tonight. Singer Michael Camacho is at Shelly's tonight.

The Patrice Williamson group with special guest Stan Strickland is at The Regattabar in Cambridge celebrating the release of the singer's newest CD, "Free to Dream." The Bruce Katz band is at the Acton Jazz Café in Acton, Mass., tonight.

The Highland Jazz series at Christ Episcopal Church in Needham tonight features saxophonist Fred Haas's quartet in a Bossa Nova High tribute to Charlie Byrd, Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. The Indigo Invention Group, led by saxophonist Hans Spencer, is at the Center for the Arts in Natick tonight. The Greg Hopkins quintet is at Zara in Worcester tonight.


Composer and pianist Miguel Romero will be bringing Cuban Jazz to the Marketplace on the Village Green in Smyrna, Ga., tonight.

The Lake Ozark, Mo., Dixieland Jazz Festival is underway through Sunday. This year's lineup includes the New Red Onion Jazz Babies, Lynn Zimmer and the Racquet Club Jazz Band, the Beale Street Jazz Band and Igor's Jazz Cowboys.


Tonight's schedule at the 20th anniversary edition of the San Francisco Jazz Festival features the Wayne Shorter and Branford Marsalis quartets at Masonic Auditorium. At the Regency Center, there's a Blues in the Ballroom concert with James "Blood" Ulmer & Vernon Reid's "Memphis Blood: The Sun Sessions" project and Johnny A., plus an 11th Hour Jam Party with the Yohimbe Brothers featuring Vernon Reid and DJ Logic.
