Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Saxophonist Jimmy Heath was born this day in Philadelphia in 1926. He's a member of one of the first families of jazz, brother to bassist Percy Heath of Modern Jazz Quartet fame and to drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath.

Bass player Chubby Jackson was born in 1918. He was a mainstay in Woody Herman's First Herd in the early 1940s and worked with the band into the 1950s. His compositions included "Northwest Passage." He's the father of big band drummer Duffy Jackson.


New Orleans guitarist Edmond Souchon was born this day in 1897. His Six and Seven-Eighths Band, a nine-member string band that was started in 1911, was revived in 1945 and continued until the 1960s. He died in 1968.
