Bass player Wendell Marshall was born this day in 1920 in St. Louis. He worked in Duke Ellington's Orchestra from 1948 to 1955.

Saxophonist Odean Pope, a member of drummer Max Roach's quartet on and off since 1967, was born this day in 1938 in Ninety Six, S.C.

On the New York jazz scene... the Kenny Barron sextet is at the Village Vanguard tonight. Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars with Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, James Moody, Slide Hampton, Benny Green, John Lee and Dennis Mackrel are at the Blue Note this week. Jackie McLean is special guest tonight and Friday nights.

The Dee Dee Bridgewater big band is at Iridium through Sunday. Larry Goldings' trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart is at the Jazz Standard. The Derrek Phillips' "Innervision" band is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Tonight's schedule at the 20th anniversary edition of the San Francisco Jazz Festival features the world premiere of " Up From The Root!" by Jon Jang with David Murray and Melody of China Ensemble plus Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa at the Herbst Theatre. The Charlie Hunter-Idris Muhammad duo and Djelimady Tounkara are teamed in a Global Guitars concert at the Regency Center.

Elsewhere on the California jazz scene... Ruben Blades and his band are at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles tonight, supporting his new Columbia recording, "Mundo." Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles with his quartet, featuring pianist Harold Mabern. The Wallace Roney quintet with Gary Bartz, Patrice Rushen, Lenny White and Bob Hurst is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood this week.
