Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Art Tatum, the man credited by virtually all jazz piano players as a major influence, was born today in 1909 in Toledo, Ohio. He has been called the greatest virtuoso to play jazz on any instrument.

Tatum was so revered that when he walked into a jam session, other players would say: "God is in the house" and surrender the piano. He was a master of harmonic substitutions that inspired the modernists who came decades later. He died in 1956 but left a rich legacy of recorded music.


Vibes player and bandleader Terry Gibbs was born this day in 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y.


Ray Brown, one of the most inventive and melodic soloists ever to pick up the upright bass, was born this day in 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He died in his sleep in Indianapolis this past July 2 while napping after a round of golf.

Alto saxophonist Lee Konitz was born this day in 1927 in Chicago.


Tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, a player whose sound blends the musical and spiritual, was born this day in 1940 in Little Rock, Ark.

The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban jazz big band is at Birdland tonight. The Arthur Blythe quartet is at the Jazz Standard. The Sam Rivers trio and the Andrew Hill quartet are at Iridium. Two duos -- Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone plus Benny Green and Russell Malone -- share the billing at the Blue Note. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke every Sunday evening.


Drummer Carl Allen's band performs this afternoon in The Jazz Room series at William Paterson University's Shea Center for the Performing Arts in Wayne, N.J.


Avishai Cohen's International Vamp Band is at Cheney Hall in Manchester, Conn., tonight.


In and around Boston... the Dolly Baker All-Star Revue with special guests Amanda Carr and Steve Marvin plus the Al Vega quintet featuring Dick Johnson and Ken Hadley is at Scullers jazz club this afternoon and tonight.
