Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Cuban percussionist Chino Pozo was born this day in 1915 in Havana. He was a cousin of Chano Pozo, the Cuban drummer who worked with Dizzy Gillespie to fuse jazz and Latin elements together. Chino Pozo also recorded with Gillespie, Tadd Dameron, Fats Navarro and Charlie Parker, and toured with Peggy Lee and Paul Anka.

Pianist Walter Bishop Jr. was born this day in 1927 in New York City. Early in his career he played with Art Blakey, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.


Electric bass player Steve Swallow was born this day in 1940 in Fair Lawn, N.J. He took up the plug-in version of the bass in the late 1960s while working in the Gary Burton quartet. Swallow was a key figure in setting out the jazz vocabulary for electric bass. He tours regularly with Carla Bley.

Bass player Eddie Gomez, a fixture in the Bill Evans trio from 1966 to 1977, was born this day in 1944 in Santurce, Puerto Rico.


On this day in 1944, singer Billie Holiday first recorded "Lover Man." Along with "Fine and Mellow," this slow and melancholic song about unrequited love became a signature tune for Holiday, the most influential woman singer in the history of jazz.

On the New York jazz scene... singer Jimmy Scott is at Birdland through Saturday. Drummer Carl Allen and his band New Spirit are at the Jazz Standard through Sunday. Guitarists Vernon Reid and James "Blood" Ulmer bring their Band "Raw Blues" into Iridium all week. Pianist Brad Mehldau's trio is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. Karrin Allyson and Joey DeFrancesco are at the Blue Note this week. The John Benitez quintet is at the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center for Earth and Science with a special guest performer.

Jazz at Lincoln Center welcomes two vocalists, Mark Murphy and Claudia Acuna, in its Singers Over Manhattan concerts tonight and Saturday in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. Rudresh Mahanthappa is at The Jazz Gallery tonight for a compact disc release celebration for his new recording, "Black Water." Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. The John Scofield band is at the State University of New York at New Paltz tonight.

Trumpeter Kermit Ruffins is at the 112th Artillery in Lawrenceville, N.J., tonight. David Chevan and the Afro-Semitic Experience and special guest Marty Ehrlich are artists in residence at Temple Sholom in Plainfield, N.J. tonight and Saturday.


The Dave Holland Big Band is at the Berklee Performance Center. Roomful of Blues is at The Regattabar in Cambridge. The Boston-area avant-garde community's sixth annual "Autumn Uprising" opens its three-day run tonight at the Institute for Contemporary Art. It features 60 musicians in some 20 performances between tonight and Sunday night.
