Bass player Dave Holland, a former Miles Davis sideman and in-demand sideman and bandleader, was born this day in 1946 in Wolverhampton in Staffordshire, England. His poll-winning quintet is one of the strongest and most consistent bands working in modern jazz today.

On this day in 1929, singer Victoria Spivey recorded "Moanin' the Blues."

On this day in 1935, the Benny Goodman Band closed its unforgettable and history-making five-week run at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. Opening night at the Palomar launched the Big Band era.

Here's how it happened: Goodman landed a radio show on NBC called "Let's Dance" in 1934. He took his new band on the road the next summer, but the coast-to-coast tour did poorly until it ran into phenomenal success at the Palomar. The Swing Era had begun -- and soon Goodman was "the King of Swing."

Goodman also was the first major white bandleader to incorporate black musicians into his band on national tour, hiring both pianist Teddy Wilson and vibes player Lionel Hampton.

On this night in 2001, Clark Terry was the honoree at the Veritas Therapeutic Community's annual "An Evening with Friends of Charlie Parker" concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.
