Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Big band trumpeter Ray Wetzel was born this day in 1924 in Parkersburg, W.Va. He was lead trumpeter in the big bands of Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Tommy Dorsey and with the Metronome All-Stars. He died in an auto accident in Colorado in 1951.

On the New York jazz scene... David Sanborn, Joe Sample and Chris Botti are at the Beacon Theater tonight as the concluding concert of the Verizon Music Festival. Ray Barretto and New World Spirit are at Iridium. The Brazilian "neo choro" band Rabo de Lagartixa is at the Jazz Standard tonight. Ted Nash's quartet is at the Village Vanguard this week. Pianist Kerry Politzer is at the Cornelia Street Cafe. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke. Guitarist Jack Wilkins' duo is at Walker's tonight.

On the Boston area jazz scene... saxophonist Gato Barbieri concludes the first annual Cambridge CityMusicFest tonight with a concert at M.I.T.'s Kresge Auditorium.

The jazz stage at the second annual Fall River Festival of the Arts this afternoon features Marcelle Gauvin, the Psychic Horns led by Dan Moretti and John Allmark, the Whaling City Sound Superband and saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi and his quartet.


The 22nd annual Savannah, Ga., Jazz Festival opens today with a weeklong series of concerts focusing on a "Divas in Jazz" theme. Various jazz performances and jam sessions are scheduled throughout Savannah. Headliners next weekend include Ingrid Jensen, Rene Marie, the Jazzberry Jam quintet, Rachel Z's trio, Irene Reid and Marlena Shaw.


In and around Chicago... Omar Sosa's octet performs tonight at HotHouse as part of the World Music Festival. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles. The Kimberly Gordan trio is at the Green Mill. The Danilo Perez is in the final night of its run at the Jazz Showcase. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. Russell Alan Rowe's trio is at Pops for Champagne.

In New Orleans tonight... the Hot Club of New Orleans swing band is at the Circle Bar. The Shannon Powell quartet is at Donna's. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. Big Sam's Funky Nation and Evan Howard are at the Funky Butt. Darrell Lavigne and Larry Sieberth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. The Johnny Vidacovich Trio featuring George Porter Jr. and June Yamagishi are at the Maple Leaf, along with Trombone Shorty's band. Lucien Barbarin and the Sunday Night Swingsters are at the Palm Court. San Francisco's Tin Hat Trio is at Snug Harbor tonight.


Today's Monterey Jazz Festival lineup includes Nancy Wilson and Ramsey Lewis, the Heath Brothers with the festival's high school all-star big band, the Randy Weston sextet, and the Dave Brubeck quartet with special guests Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride and Liz Wright. Today's other artists include the Mingus Big Band, Houston Person with Rhoda Scott's B-3 trio, Masters of the Groove, and the Weber Iago trio.


Elsewhere in California... Keiko Matsui and Craig Chaquico are at Humphrey's by the Bay and singer-songwriter Elizabeth Hummel is in the spotlight at Dizzy's in San Diego tonight. The Yellowjackets are at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood. Pat Kelley is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks tonight. The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton this afternoon. Kenny Rankin is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. Holland's Willem Breuker Kollektief is at Rocco's in Los Angeles tonight. Percussionist John Santos and his Machete Ensemble are at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight.

The first All-Canadian Jazz Festival in Port Hope, Ontario, concludes today with the Peter Dent quintet, the Rhythm and Truth Brass Band, Shirley Eikhard, and the Climax Jazz Band.
