MORE IN-AIRPORT WEAPONS ARRESTS

Officials at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta tell the Atlanta Journal and Constitution that two men were arrested at that sprawling jetport on Thursday. Guards discovered that one had a loaded handgun and the other had a knife. The man carrying the gun was arrested when the weapon set off alarms when he was going through a metal detector while heading for an airline gate.

When questioned, the man told police that he forgot he had it with him. He was officially charged with carrying a deadly weapon in a public place.

Just half an hour later a knife was found in the bag of another passenger trying to board a plane. The owner of the knife also told officials that he forgot he was carrying the weapon. No flights were affected by the police actions.

AMERICA HAS A NEW IDOL

The first season of the Fox network's high-tech version of "Star Search" has come to an end. The finals were held at the new Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Clarkson will, according to Fox, now receive a recording contract with RCA and will likely be the subject of instant adulation and possibly go on a national tour.

Guarini, disappointed but not dejected, says he plans on pursuing a career on Broadway.

MANY ANGERED AT PLANNED PROFILING

As the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks approaches, more plans are being announced to again tighten security on airliners and in other forms of transportation. According to the Los Angeles Times, an announced anti-terrorism system that would require fingerprinting and use a new, higher level of ethnic profiling, has some Arab spokesmen up in arms.

The publication says that some 26 countries are on a special list of areas from which incoming tourists will be given a higher level of scrutiny.

With the announcement also comes the fear that many people in those countries will opt not to visit the States, going instead to Canada or other destinations, hurting the American travel industry even more.

Tougher regulations are now causing long waits for entrance visas into this country.

SAM'S CLUB FINED FOR INFESTATION

Don't joke about "mice in the cupboard" to officials of Sam's Club. Health department records in Atlanta show that inspectors found more than a dozen mice in a suburban Atlanta Sam's Club during a recent check of stores in that area. There are reports that the fine will amount to about $80,000 ... about $5,333 per mouse.

Additionally, published reports indicate that the department put the store on probation for 18 months.

The check that garnered the rodent information was made after an anonymous caller told health department officials that a mouse had been sighted in a food cooler. An army of some 20 inspectors went through the store, finding traces of droppings and also some gnawed food packages.
