Today is Aug. 31.

Saxophonist, arranger and composer Edgar Sampson was born this day in 1907 in New York City. While he played with the early Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Rex Stewart and Chick Webb bands, Sampson was one of the most widely heard but least celebrated writers of Swing Era music. His classic tunes included "When Dreams Come True," "Blue Lou," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and "Don't Be That Way."

On this day in 1939, Frank Sinatra first recorded "All or Nothing At All" with the Harry James Band.
