Trumpeter Kenny Dorham, a brilliant player and fine composer, was born this day in 1924 in Fairfield, Texas. He followed Miles Davis in the Charlie Parker quintet, was a co-founder of the Jazz Messengers and briefly led his own similar group, the Jazz Prophets. Dorham died of kidney failure in 1972.

The Tanglewood Jazz Festival opens its Labor Day Weekend run in Lenox, Mass., tonight with a Latin program featuring Arturo Sandoval and Nestor Torres. Saturday's lineup includes the Jimmy McGriff quartet and the Joey DeFrancesco trio, David "Fathead" Newman, Marian McPartland, Roland Hanna, the Diana Krall trio, and drummer Roy Haynes and Birds of a Feather. Sunday's finale features the Roy Hargrove quintet, Roberta Gambarini and Dave Brubeck Quartet.
Philadelphia's weeklong celebration of native son McCoy Tyner moves tonight to the Annenberg Center for a Latin All Stars concert featuring Celia Cruz, Roy Ayers, Papo Vasquez, Paquito D'Rivera and Hilton Ruiz.
The 23rd annual Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival also opens today. The four-day event is free at Hart Plaza situated between the city's skyline and the Detroit River.
