Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Aug. 18.

Drummer Don Lamond was born this day in 1920 in Oklahoma City. He joined the first Woody Herman band in 1945 as a replacement for Dave Tough, and was a member of Herman's Second Herd. Throughout a long career, he recorded with a wide array of players, including Serge Chaloff, Bob Crosby, Quincy Jones, Willie The Lion Smith and George Russell.

On this day in 1932, singer Mildred Bailey first recorded "Rockin' Chair" for the Victor label in New York City.

Jazz Norfolk presents a free concert tonight by The Red Coats Big Band at Ocean View Beach Park.

There's a "Tribute To Billie Holiday" today with Jimmy "Gator" Hoare, Tamil Jordan, Ray Miller, Larry Sharpe and Art Jensen at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

In the Chicago area... today's Eclectic Picnic at the McAninch Arts Center courtyard at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill., features The Blue Rubies, Two For Brazil with Paulinho Garcia and Greg Fishman and special guest Hector Garcia, Professor John and guitarist Henry Johnson and his Organ Express band.

The Lou Donaldson quartet is at the Jazz Showcase tonight. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui tonight. The Kimberly Gordan trio is at the Green Mill. Sonny Turner is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park tonight. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles.

In New Orleans... the Hot Club of New Orleans swing band is at the Circle Bar tonight. The Shannon Powell quartet is at Donna's. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. Big Sam's Funky Nation and Evan Howard are at the Funky Butt. Dean Fransen and Fred Sanders are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. The Johnny Vidacovich trio featuring George Porter Jr. is at the Maple Leaf. Lucien Barbarin and the Sunday Night Swingsters are at the Palm Court. Dejan's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall tonight. Jason Marsalis is at Snug Harbor and the Improvisational Arts Council performs in the Trinity Artist Series.

On the California jazz scene... the JVC Jazz Festival with George Benson, Steve Cole and Fourplay is at the Hollywood Bowl today. Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton features Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band tonight. Trumpeter Marcus Printup's quintet is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. Organ player Joey DeFrancesco's trio is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band is at Spaghettini Italian Grill in Seal Beach.

The 5th annual O.C. Smith Summer Jazz Festival winds down today at City of Angels in Los Angeles. Today's lineup includes Freddy Cole, Les McCann, Barbara Morrison, Diane Schuur, the Gerald Wilson Big Band, Miki Howard, Eric Marienthal and Chieli Minucci.

Singer Shirley Horn and her trio are at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle tonight.
