Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Aug. 13.

Pianist George Shearing was born this day in 1919 in London. He settled in the United States in 1947 and has worked steadily on the festival and club scene. For nearly 30 years, he has led a series of duos and trios. In the past three years, he also has revived his classic quintet. Shearing's 1952 tune "Lullaby of Birdland" remains a prime jazz standard.

Trumpeter Benny Bailey, one of the great solo improvisers, was born this day in 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Guitarist Joe Puma was born this day in 1927 in New York.

Pianist Mulgrew Miller was born this day in 1955 in Greenwood, Miss. A graduate of Betty Carter's band and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Miller is very busy as a leader and a sideman.

The Duke Ellington Orchestra directed by Paul Mercer Ellington and Jack Jeffers is at Birdland tonight.

Bobby Sanabria is at North Plaza this morning and this evening as part of Lincoln Center's Out of Doors festival. Keith Ganz and Sean Smith are at the Cornelia Street Cafe tonight. The Mark Egan trio is at the Zinc Bar tonight and Wednesday. Dave Liebman and Wolfgang Reisinger are at the Knitting Factory's Old Office while Ras Moshe and the Music Now Society with Matt Lavelle, Matana Roberts, David Brandt, Todd Nicholson and Francois Grillot are at the AlternKnit Theatre. The William Hooker quartet is on the Knitting Factory's main stage.

Saxophonist Greg Abate and his band are at The Crossing in Smithfield, R.I., tonight.

Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton features the Mort Weiss-Ron Eschete quartet. Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band is at the Memorial Park Bandshell in Pasadena tonight. The Vince Lateano trio, featuring pianist Matt Clark, is at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco.

Expect a lot of Latin Fireworks tonight with Ray Barretto and Michel Camilo on the main stage at France's Jazz en Marciac festival.

On the recording front...

Pianist Ted Rosenthal is just out with a very fine solo recording called "The 3 B's," on which he reinterprets favorite music by or associated with Bud Powell, Bill Evans and Beethoven. This is his second for Playscape Recordings.

The Blue Note label is out today with three enhanced reissues from the Capitol Jazz vaults. One is Nat King Cole's "At the Sands." It is only official live recording and has three more tunes added. There even is an instrumental version of "Where or When" featuring Cole at the piano.

Record producer Joel Dorn is launching his fourth label in September. Hyena Records' first three recordings will be reissues of live sessions by Rahsaan Roland Kirk -- "The Man Who Cried Fire" -- and Cannonball Adderley -- "Radio Nights". Dorn will follow those Sept. 17 releases with Les McCann's "Les is More" and Eddy Harris's "A Tale of Two Cities" on Oct. 1. These four classics, originally on Night Records, have been long out of print.
